I will check about the attributes not defined into the template but it is normal that the attribute in the template are applied directly on the new elements

Check also if you are using a default template set because the attribute of a template set (not a template style) overwrite the one of the elements and so it ovverride also the styles.

Open an external file is possibile but the use of the workspace is highly suggested. For now i've made a fix for the resource bundle, when you open an external file a project folder called "External Files" is created if not existing and inside there a link to your file is created and opened.

However we do it in a smarter way the a simple configuration in the preferences. From the report editor you will need to click on the settings menu and go to the Elements Templates submenu. Here select the option to create a new template. Essentially a template is a report where the elements in the detail are taken as reference for the other report. So for example if you place in the detail of the template a text field with height 20 and purple background (always remember to save the template), when you are using it every text field will have height 20 and purple background. You can have multiple templates and switch from one to another at any time form the elements templates menu. About this, after you have create a new template look if it is active (on the elements templates menu it will have an ok symbol on the left), i don't remember if a new template is set as active by default.
