Seem the same problem. 5.5.0 css does not work with 5.6.0 and result in what you've described.

A theme should only contain what you've modified. Unless you've modified the css files, the theme shouldn't contain them. We took out all the css from the theme because they weren't modified and it's worked as expected. Switch back to the "default" theme and fix your theme.

BTW, the upgrade should have switched the theme to "default".

Had exactly the same issue. Got a 5.6 default theme zip-file and installed it as default5.6 theme. Made it active and things are working again. Could not overwrite default theme (on AWS) which seems to be broken after the import.
