Something must be wrong with my setup. I noticed that in the failure of my last post #50074, the error is due to an offending line in /WEB-INF/applicationContext-report-scheduling.xml related to a parameter quartz.delegateClass (see the log in the code section below), so I decided to move out that xml file.
Then I ran into a problem with another xml file: /WEB-INF/applicationContext-report-options.xml (see the log in the code section below), so I also moved out that xml file.
Then I ran into a problem with yet another xml file: /WEB-INF/applicationContext-adhoc.xml (see the log in the code section below), so I also moved out that xml file
Now, I found that I would not have an errro message in catalina.out, but the startup did not appear to have finished (but stop right after the point of "INFO: XML validataion disabled" (also see the log below).
When I pointed my browser to the jasperserver, I did not get a "404 The requested resource is not available" message. Instead, the browser would go into a perpetual wait.
Please help. Thanks!
Clement

I am still stuck at my upgrade ...
I made some progress but am still not there.
I noticed that there are several things to be careful (the sections below refer to the JasperServerPro Installation Guide)
1. Whenever I mess with the directory apache-tomcat/webapps/jasperserver-pro/, I need to shut down tomcat first; otherwise I may lose the whole directory (I don't understand why, however)
2. There MUST NOT be the war file apache-tomcat/webapps/jasperserver-pro.war, but there MUST be the directory apache-tomcat/webapps/jasperserver-pro (Section B.2.3)
3. I must manually merge the content of the two files (under apache-tomcat/webapps/jasperserver-pro/)
WEB-INF/js.mail.properties
WEB-INF/js.scheduler.properties
to the file
WEB-INF/js.quartz.properties
(C.f. Section 9.3)
4. There also MUST NOT be a file
apache-tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost/jasperserver-pro.xml
(C.f. Section B.2.3 -- but note that there are some typos there)
Instead, a file
apache-tomcat/webapps/META-INF/context.xml
MUST be there and contain the right username and password to connect to the local mysql DB. I can verify this username and password by trying interactively logging into the DB
# mysql -u <username> -p
<type in the password>
Despite all cautions that I have taken, I still got this (more detailed log from catalina.out in the code section below)
error Could not resolve placeholder 'quartz.delegateClass'
I am stuck now. Please help!

Okay, I found the problem was related to two things
1. config parameters in WEB-INF/js.{mail,scheduler}.properties must be merged (manually) into the file WEB-INF/js.quartz.properties (see Section 9.3 of the Installation Guide)
2. there must not any one of the two stray files in the file system (see Appendix B.2.3 of the Installation Guide):
apache-tomcat/webapps/jasperserver-pro.war
apache-tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost/jasperserver-pro.xml
For more info, see this thread
http://jasperforge.org/plugins/espforum/view.php?group_id=112&forumid=102&topicid=48943&res=41
or equivalently,
-
Okay, now I understand that I also need to remove (or move away) this file (if it is there)
apache-tomcat/webapps/jasperserver-pro.war
For more info, read Appendix B.2.3 (Special Confguration Case under Tomcat) of the JasperServer Installation Guide.
Now I don't see any start-up error message in catalina.YYYY-MM-DD.log, catalina.out, nor localhost.YYYY-MM-DD.log
However, my browser still could not get to the jasperserver as it could before my upgrade. The url that I pointed to is http://:8080/jasperserver-pro
The error message was "404 The requested resource (/jasperserver-pro) is not available". Any idea? Thanks!

Hi,
I am stuck at exactly the point as #48955 above.
I noticed that my apache-tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost/jasperserver-pro.xml contains
username="root" password="password"
and my apache-tomcat/webapps/jasperserver-pro/META-INF/context.xml contains
username="jasperdb" password="password"
which are the correct values, but Tomcat upon start would pickup the values from the first file.
I tried the procedures suggested in #48977 but it did not work.
Any help? Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,
Season's greetings everyone!
I just upgraded my JasperServer Pro from 3.0.1 to 3.1, but then it refused to start.
I was already following the procedures outlined in the installation guide (Chapter 9: Upgrading from JasperServer 3.0 to JasperServer 3.1)
The error messages of apache-tomcat/logs/catalina.*.log is listed below -- but the most important lines are
Dec 24, 2008 6:42:06 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start
SEVERE: Error listenerStart
Dec 24, 2008 6:42:06 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start
SEVERE: Context [/jasperserver-pro] startup failed due to previous errorsApparently there were no error messages shown in localhost.*.log, but I am listing it anyway.
From my browser pointing to the server, I got this message: 404: The requested resource (/jasperserver-pro/) is not available.
Any help is appreciated.

In JasperServer, if I add an input control that is of type
"multi-select query", then what is the type of the result?
If, for example, I want to have a parameterized report in which the
SQL where cause contains conditions like this
where type="a" or type="b" or type="c"
and I want people to use a checkbox multi-select query to select the
values "a", "b", "c" from a list of many values {"a", "b", "c", "d",
...}, is this possible? How do I translate back the result of the
multi-select query back to the where cause?
I have googled the web and read the JasperServerPro user guide but
could not find an answer.

Hi,
I want to make a stacked bar with the X-axis value from a time
series. I learned that there is no stacked (bar or area) time series,
so I decided to use a vanilla stackedArea, and just assign the
"Category expression" so that it take values from a time field. (By the way, the
two names "series expression" and "category expression" seem inverted
to me -- it took me a long time to find out what each of them actually
means)
However, the plot is not pretty, because I have too many data points
(see the attached image).
So I thought maybe I should write the label expression in such a way
that a string is displayed only a few other lines. Is there a way to
do that?
I tried several methods to no avail:
1. I set the label expression to (see Code Listing 1) use the
deprecated getMinutes() method of a java.util.Date object
2. I then tried using a java.util.Calendar object, this object has to
be calculated for every row in the data set, and I don't know how
to do that. The constructor of java.util.Calendar does not take
the time value; instead, one must get an instance by a
getInstance() static method, and then use the setTimeInMillis()
method to set the time value. This latter method returns void.
None of the "Calculation Type" -- "Nothing", "Sum", "Average",
"First" seems to be appropriate. Also I also tried setting the
time in the "label expression", that also did not work. I think I
can not execute more than one java statement in the "label
expression", can I? (See Code Listing 2) (And in java there is no
"common operator" that let you link two statements together)
I am stuck now. Any ideas will be appreciated.
Clement
Code: Code Listing 1$V{createtime_java_util_Date}.getMinutes()==0) ? $V{createtime_java_util_Date}.toLocaleString() : ""Code Listing 2$V{createtime_java_util_Calendar}.setTimeInMillis($F{createtime}.longValue()*1000); ($V{createtime_java_util_Calendar}.get( Calendar.MINUTES )==0) ? $V{createtime_java_util_Date}.toLocaleString() : ""

Thanks! I guess I will have to upgrade then.

For pie charts, how do I set the font of the label?
I could find the setting for the font of the legend but
not for the label.
Is there a FAQ? I searched a bit for it but could not
seem to find it.Thanks!

(This question can also be cast as "how to find the final total while walking through each row of a dataset")
I want to plot a pie chart. In the label expression, I want to show the
percentage of each category in the overall total (i.e. the value of each
key with respect to the overall total)
So I wrote the Label Expression to be
NumberFormat.getPercentInstance().format($F{num_incidents}.floatValue()/$V{totalNumIncident}.longValue())
Here the $F{num_incidents} is the value of each row while
$V{totalNumIncident} is my lame attempt to final the overall total
$V{totalNumIncident} is calculated with the following settings
Calculation Type: Sum
Reset Type: Report
Increment Type: None
Variable Expression: $F{num_incidents}
Initial Value Expression: new Long(0)
However, what I found is that the variable $V{totalNumIncident} was
the *running total* at the time each row of the dataset was examined
(i.e. when each category in the pie chart was plotted) but not the *final
total*, so the precentages were all wrong.
The final total (of all categories) can only be known when all rows have
been walked through (all categories plotted), but when I plot each
category, I need to know the final total. It looks like I need two
passes of walking through the data. But I don't know how to express
that in iReport.Thanks!

Hi,
1. I tried again installing on another Linux machine -- this time without any pre-installed MySQL on it, and the installation went through well and the report site could be setup. So apparently the install script may not handle well the case where there is an existing MySQL. I checked the install log (/tmp/bitrock_installer*.log) of my previous failed installation. It stopped at the point after this line
Creating Sample Databases - This may take a few minutes.
Executing /opt/jasperserver-pro-3.0/scripts/mysql/sampledata_init.sh
Comparing to the install log of the successful installation, the subsequest lines should be:
Script exit code: 0
Script output:
Script stderr:
^G/opt/jasperserver-pro-3.0/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: DROP DATABASE sugarcrm failed;
error: 'Can't drop database 'sugarcrm'; database doesn't exist'
^G/opt/jasperserver-pro-3.0/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: DROP DATABASE foodmart failed;
error: 'Can't drop database 'foodmart'; database doesn't exist'
Generating Metadata Population. This may take a moment.
Executing /opt/jasperserver-pro-3.0/ant/bin/ant
Script exit code: 0
Script output:
Buildfile: build.xml
...2. As you can see from above, there were error messages about DROP DATABASE sugarcrm and footmart. There messages should not be there as a new installation naturally would not have that two databases. I think this message can be suppressed by an IF EXISTS qualifer.
3. My machine does not have a real dns domain name, and the installer choked (see code below). I had to uninstall, add a hostname in /etc/hosts, and then install. And this time the installation went through.
4. The uninstaller is installed only at the very end of a successful installation. This means failed installation (like the one that I have) would not have an uninstaller to undo it.
Thanks for all the help!
Clement

Okay I installed a second instance of JasperServer. This time I selected to use both the bundled Tomcat and MySQL (also I am installing it on a Windows XP machine).
The installation went well this time. As the sample user "joeuser" I could see many reports.
I checked the content of JIJdbcDatasource, indeed the table was populated (while in my last installation, which did not go well, this table is empty). (See code below).
Also, another related table JIResource in this successful installation has many entries (289 to be precise), while in the previous failed installation it has only 1 entry.
Looks like the install script somehow failed to populate at least these two tables. Not sure if that was due to fact that I elected to not using a bundled MySQL.
Can someone tell me how can I repopulate these tables? Or maybe I should uninstall and reinstall?
Thanks!
Clement

I just installed JasperServer. I chose to use existing MySQL (but bundled Tomcat).
I noticed that there were no reports shown when I log in (as jasperadmin). Also, the "Domains" and "Topics" are both empty.
I then debuged the install scripts. I noticed that in sampledata_init.sh there are two lines that would update the records in the table JIJdbcDataSource (of jasperserver) ( I eclipsed the password parameters below)
/usr/bin/mysql -h 127.0.0.1 -P 3306 -u root --password="..."
--force jasperserver -e "UPDATE JIJdbcDatasource SET username='jasperdb',
password='$1',connectionUrl='jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/sugarcrm' WHERE id='3';"
...
/usr/bin/mysql -h 127.0.0.1 -P 3306 -u root --password="..."
--force jasperserver -e "UPDATE JIJdbcDatasource SET username='jasperdb',
password='$1',connectionUrl='jdbc:mysql://127.0.0.1:3306/foodmart';"However, when I look at the table JIJdbcDatasource, it is actually empty.
I am thinking that perhaps because I chose to not install MySQL (but using an existing one), somehow the steps to populate the table were omit in the install script?
Can I manually populate the table? What should be the data there.
This is version jasperserver-pro-3.0.1-linux-installer.bin, downloaded on Oct 21, 2008. I am installing it on a Linux machine.
Thanks!
Clement

Error upgrading to JS 3.1

Sherman,
Thanks for your help. But unfortunately the problem is still there.
In your message, you suggested to use quartz.delegateClass while the original js.quartz.properties use org.quartz.jobStore.driverDelegateClass
There are also some other subtle difference between your suggested keys (see the code below for a diff). Are they intended. I hope there were no typos in your message.
In any case, I got the same error. That is, the start up seems to abort after the line
INFO: XML validation disabled
and the web browser would be going into a perpetual wait (but not getting a 404 error as before, such as that in #50064)
I also attached the startup message from catalina.out in the code below.
