Custom datasource and subreports

I have a problem that maybe is easy to solve... I have a report which is composed of a header with some info and a variable numer of parts, which in turn are composed of several lines (for the sake of simplicity, let's assume there is just a single field).

I thought to divide this into a master report with the header, and a subreport in the detail band, so that, if there are data to print two or three parts, they get generated using the subreport.

The problem is that the data should come in the form of a custom datasource and I don't know if there is any way of passing to a subreport some subset of the datasource... or if I should generate severas DSs and pass them to each subreport as attributes... sadly, this will force me to have a fixed number of parts...
