Running total or cummulative sum in Jasper reports

I've seen that suggested before, but I am not seeing any way to create a variable from within an Ad Hoc view. The link attached was for Jaspersoft Studio, which is not what I am using. I am working with a version of Jasper Reports Server that is embedded within another application, Medidata Edge CTMS. -
Is there a way in a report to have a running total for a column? This seems like a fairly standard feature for reports, but I can't see any way to do it.
