On basis of my personal experience i want to tell you that. It is quite tough and irretating to use jasper on linux as there are continous fluctuation on the screen and if you are wirking on crosstab then condition become more complex so according to me switch to windows.

I am creating a report in which i have created a parameter whose input control type is 'Multi-select Query' and the query for that parameter is giving string type data thus i have specified its type as java.lang.String but it is not working and when i am specifying it as java.util.Collection it is giving error Error MessageReport design not valid :1. Parameter type not supported in query : StatusNamePromptM class java.util.Collection
