When I create a new variable and then "Check Expression", under Validation errors the statement "Expression successfully validated." is sometimes colored red and other times colored blue. What is the significance of the two different colors? Thank you.

How do I get variables to execute in a header? They work fine in the detail band and below but not in the header. Thank you.

I'm looking at using Jasper instead of Crystal Reports. I have a strong PC computer / programmer and database development background but I've never worked with Unix or Java. I've done some minor development using PHP and C/C++ but I would consider myself a beginner with both of these tools. In the opinion of those of you that have used Jasper for awhile, would I be in over my head trying to jump right into Jasper? If so, what prerequisites should I learn first? Thank you.
