JasperReports Server : Open Source License vs. Commercial License

Jaspersoft is the reporting software you need if your reports really matter to your success.  Available in two editions—commercial and community—users can choose the one that’s right for their organization’s needs.

There are critical license differences between our JasperReports Server commercial edition, which is available under commercial subscription licenses, and our JasperReports Server community edition, which is available under a “strong copy-left” open source license. While the following highlights key differences, we suggest that you consult with your attorney to better understand the differences between the licenses and, in particular, the risks associated with using the community edition in a commercial context.

JasperReports Server community edition:

• Licensed under the highly restrictive GNU Affero General Public License v.3 (“AGPL 3”)
• User must make or offer to make the source code available under the AGPL 3
• User’s proprietary code is placed at risk, as the obligation to make source code available under the AGPL 3 may extend to the user’s proprietary software
• In a notable difference from the standard GNU General Public License, the obligation to make source code available under the AGPL 3 may extend to the user’s proprietary software, even when the community edition is included as part of a hosted offering and is not distributed by the user
• The AGPL 3 does not include support, maintenance, warranties, or indemnities

As of January 25, 2024, JasperReports Server community edition will be discontinued. Although you can continue to use a version of JasperReports Server you have already downloaded, this software will no longer be maintained and there will be no new fixes for critical security vulnerabilities. Security vulnerabilities can lead to data breaches, unauthorized system access, or other security-related concerns.  

With our Jaspersoft commercial edition:
