Is it possible to recompile this application for windows or macintosh, or are the Microsoft classes used for the UI strictly windows classes?

I think that for Mac it's not possible, but it's a my personal conjecture. Perhaps it is possible to recompile iReport with VisualJ# (VisualStudio.NET) and use .net Virtual Machine (exists .net VM for Mac?!)

I misspoke... I meant to say Linux. So I assume it's not possible to run this application on Linux?

Unfortunately it is not possible to compile iReport under linux. iReport is written in VisualJ++, and it is not even easy to re-use the code (java) for a porting under linux (for exaple using C++ and gtk).

Have you tried jasperdesign(http://http://sourceforge.net/projects/jasperdesign) ?
