Subreport with CLOB

I'm having trouble with a subreport that contains a CLOB field.

SELECT field1, field2 FROM table1 WHERE KEY = 537, where field1 is a clob.

I attached this query to a report and a subreport within that report. in the report, the data prints out fine. however, when the subreport runs, only the data for field2 appears ( a string field ), while all of the data for field1 ( CLOB ), shows up as null. i have tried trimming the clob field but that doesn't seem to help. has anyone seen anything like this before?
