I have a report, not too complicated, but it has ended up using FIVE differant subreports. Some just to do simple text retrieval queries for column headers. The subreports end up with strange sizes like 240 x 14 pixels so they fit in the required space on the main report.

 

Surely I must be missing something!

 

Is there a way to use subdatasets to have differant queries and fields for differant bands?

You could use scriptlets and the report-connection for the queries.
