I've applied the following ExporterParameter to the JRXlsExporter object: net.sf.jasperreports.engine.export.JRXlsExporter.setParameter(net.sf.jasperreports.engine.export.JRXlsExporterParameter.IS_AUTO_DETECT_CELL_TYPE, java.lang.Boolean.TRUE) but this seems to make no difference.
