blank detail band

I have a report that I has a subreport for the detail band. I pass in some objects to the subreport that have some values set inside the subreport so I can then use them outside of the subreport. The problem I'm running into is that if the subreport is blank, the detail band is blank (sometimes I don't want to show the details band). If the detail band is blank the whole report doesn't render.

 

How can I make a report render even if the detail band is blank?
