How to publish reports with parameters

I'm trying to publish with an input variable and keep getting illegal.parameter.value.error: 

    at com.jaspersoft.studio.server.publish.Publish.publishResources(Publish.java:191)
    at com.jaspersoft.studio.server.publish.Publish.publish(Publish.java:67)
    at com.jaspersoft.studio.server.publish.wizard.Publish2ServerWizard$3.run(Publish2ServerWizard.java:310)
    at org.eclipse.jface.operation.ModalContext$ModalContextThread.run(ModalContext.java:122)

Can someone please advise on what I should do? I tried modifying the connection to Jasper server from current, but only have 5... versions showing as alternatives.

One situation where this can happen is if you use a Studio version to publish to an older JR Server version. See these articles:
