How to get Metadata from Data Source when Data Adapter is set to "Use Connection Defined Inside Report"

Hello,

I'm having an issue with setting up my data adapter. I've created reports just fine with how it's currently setup, but for more detailed reports I need to be able to access the metadata so I can create 'SQL select' statements using the pre-defined options set in the metadata dropdown if that makes sense. If I click on the text tab at the bottom of this window it gives me the option to modify the code that uses the <xxx> type of language (which I know is still SQL) but whatever I add there never seems to work. I really need access to the metadata to properly build my SQL select statements.

Can anyone help me?
