use group to supress printing repeated data

I want to group three columns (example date, first name, last name) so that they are only printed once in the report (versus once for every row the same combination appears in the result set). Following this data, on the same line, I want to get a count of the rows in which this data was repeated (and other minor calculations). Is there a way to do this using iReport groups (vs modifying result set/scriplets/etc)?
