Excel - column hidden in iReport but not after I deploy to application

Hi all, I have some columns in a report that need to be hidden based on a condition - it is basically a timesheet display that can have up to 18 days in a period. Normally a period is 7 days so I hide columns/fields based on number of days data available. This works fine when I preview in Excel from iReports. But when I deploy this to my app, the empty columns/fields show up as one blank column. Have you seen behaviour like this?

The app is a report service that has a Jasper report engine (as well as BIRT) - it takes streamed xml data and a .jasper file and generates a report - PDF or Excel depending on what the user requires.

Has anyone seen differing behaviour like this?
