variable calculations based on groups

Hi

 

i have groups based on category name and i wanna index the pages based on category for example

 

category1....page 3

category2...page 18

 

this is my info

variable name: indexText

class: String

Reset type: report

Incrememnt type: group

calculation : nothing

 

variable expression

$V{indexText} = $F{CATEGORY_DESCRIPTION}+ "........ " +$V{PAGE_NUMBER}

 

it gives me the error "left hand side of the expression has to be variable????

I hope I'm not interpretting what you psted incorrectly.

Your variable expression should simply be

$F{CATEGORY_DESCRIPTION}+ "........ " +$V{PAGE_NUMBER}
