how to make connection with datasource

hello everybody. i use ireport  3.7.3 to create my first report but  i found problems in the step 1 : create a database  jdbc connection, i have this configuration:

server: localhost

database: mysql

i download myql connector and i add it on options/ireport/classpath/addjar

when i click on test they show me this message :

sql problems:communications link failure.

on details they say 

 

    com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure

Last packet sent to the server was 0 ms ago.

Are you able to connect to MySQL using some other client?
