How to modify a report template ".jasper"

I'm a beginer of iReport, the reason I use it because my company using "Fishbowl Inventory", it's a Inventory Management software, there's a lot report template.

One of the report is"billoflading", I saw two file under the report folder as below.

billoflading.jasper    &     billoflading.jrxml

I trying to make a little bit change on that report, I change the .jrxml file, and then I go back to my software, nothing changed.

Then I try to change the .jasper file, but I don't know how to save it, it seems only can save as .jrxml format.

Please teach me how to do this simple job, I just want to delete one word in the template.

Compile the jrxml template with iReport. If its compiled successfully the jasper file will be created.
