crosstab report

I am fairly new to Jaspersoft. I was trying to create a crosstab report using iReport3.1.2 but getting the error when trying to preview it:

Error filling print... Error incrementing crosstab dataset

I see the increment options available in the crosstab dataset on the right-click but I do not understand the options such as "none", "Report", "Page", or "group". Also there are Increment group (disabled) and Increment expression pieces.

By default, 'Increment' option is set to 'none' and if I change it to 'group', it says no groups.

Could someone tell me what may be wrong here?

I figured myself that the Incremental error was due to creation of the crosstab report in the detail section oppose to the summary section.
