Metadata schema default values

I am trying to setup some data inputs from xml. I need to represent a tag in the schema whether or not the tag is present in the xml file. If the tag is not present I need to it hold and present to any down stream component a default value. I have set the the value in the metadata schema editor. When I run the input component to a logrow it ouputs the value from the row before it or null depending on the settings in the metadata schema.

 

My question is how do I make a tFileInput component present a default value to a downstream component?
