iReport "proxy server"?

We are building JasperReports into our web-based application. We're creating a number of reports using iReport which users will run via our web site.

It'd be really nice if our users could download iReport and create their own reports but there are multiple firewalls between their PCs and our database server (it's an internet-delivered application) so iReport won't be able to talk to the database using JDBC.

Has anyone created any techniques to allow this to work. What I have in mind is some form of proxy server (preferably a set of classes/JSPs to run on the Tomcat web server) which iReport could talk to and, once correctly authenticated, would be able to pass requests to and from the database server (which is Sybase by the way).

Before I start reinventing the wheel, has anyone developed anything like this, or is there an iReport capability which does this that I'm missing.

Thanks!

Richard
