You have to put your formulas in the textfield expression field. By default, Java is used as expression language, but you can switch to groovy setting ReportProperties -> tab servlet -> expression language = groovy.

 

Groovy accept expressions like:

 

$F{Field1} + $F{Field2}

I did not find the way ReportProperties -> tab servlet -> expression language = groovy in iReport 0.4.1
