Do I still need jasperreport if I use ireport

Trying to understand what does ireport do? Is it just a compile tool. The tutorial on this page talks about generating compiled file and then using Japser report to actually run the report??? I am confused with this stuff.

You need to review the information on Jasper Reports website. Then iReport will make more sense. As I see it there are three parts to Jasper.

1) Jasper Reports - its the engine that will produce/render reports. Allows for unlimited data sources and parameter passing. Reports are based on XML code.

2) iReports - its the graphics tool that allows you to create xml files.

3) OpenReports - its the user interface that product reports for users or you can choose to write your own interface for users, which is what I did.

By using Jasper Reports and iReports together, I've been able to replace cognos and crystal reports for 95% of my users that just needed basic reports. I still have a few power users that require cognos. I have about 300 named users that print almost 900 reports a day, mostly to PDF or Excel files.
