    I am using the trunk (developer) version of Jaspersoft studio. When I create a new XML data adapter from my local file, and use it for a Jasper report, in the Preview of the report, it cannot generate a report and gives me such error:

    java.lang.NullPointerException

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.loadDataDocument(XmlDataAdapterService.java:169)

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.contributeParameters(XmlDataAdapterService.java:90)

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.AbstractDataAdapterService.test(AbstractDataAdapterService.java:129)

    at com.jaspersoft.studio.data.wizard.AbstractDataAdapterWizard$3.run(AbstractDataAdapterWizard.java:165)

    at org.eclipse.jface.operation.ModalContext$ModalContextThread.run(ModalContext.java:121)

    But if I create the same report with the same XML data adapter in Jaspersoft Studio 5.6.1, it works fine.

    How to fix it?

    Hi,it's possible this problem has already been solved.I've just checked with the last sources available. Test works fine and also previewing a report that uses an XML data adapter works correct.Regards,Massimo.

    Hi Massimo,I just installed JSS 6.0.0 and since i'm also using XML documents as data sources i came across this issue.It's - at leat for me - quite easy to reproduce:I can create a new data adapter (XML document type), but when i click on the Test button i'll get an Exception message box with the following details:java.lang.NullPointerException at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.loadDataDocument(XmlDataAdapterService.java:169) at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.contributeParameters(XmlDataAdapterService.java:90) at net.sf.jasperreports.data.AbstractDataAdapterService.test(AbstractDataAdapterService.java:129) at com.jaspersoft.studio.data.wizard.AbstractDataAdapterWizard$3.run(AbstractDataAdapterWizard.java:165) at org.eclipse.jface.operation.ModalContext$ModalContextThread.run(ModalContext.java:121)When i try to execute a simple report using such a XML document data adapter i'll get the following output in the console:Start Report ExecutionCompiling report......DONESetting Data Adapter...DONESetting Virtualizer...DONEFilling Report........ERRORnet.sf.jasperreports.engine.JRException: java.lang.NullPointerException at com.jaspersoft.studio.editor.preview.view.control.ReportControler.fillReport(ReportControler.java:467) at com.jaspersoft.studio.editor.preview.view.control.ReportControler.access$18(ReportControler.java:442) at com.jaspersoft.studio.editor.preview.view.control.ReportControler$4.run(ReportControler.java:334) at org.eclipse.core.internal.jobs.Worker.run(Worker.java:54)Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.loadDataDocument(XmlDataAdapterService.java:169) at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.contributeParameters(XmlDataAdapterService.java:90) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRFillDataset.contributeParameters(JRFillDataset.java:1024) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRFillDataset.setParameterValues(JRFillDataset.java:629) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.BaseReportFiller.setParameters(BaseReportFiller.java:433) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.JRBaseFiller.fill(JRBaseFiller.java:508) at net.sf.jasperreports.engine.fill.BaseFillHandle$ReportFill.run(BaseFillHandle.java:120) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)Report Execution Finished.I'll the same error(s) when i create the data adapter in the Repository Explorer *and* when i create it in the workspace (Project Explorer). Hello,I have exactly the same issue as described by Michael Schmid.In my project, EVERY data source is an XML data source. So, Jaspersoft Studio 6.0.0 is NOT usable on our project. That's really a pity because I need the book function in some of the reports.The project is thus stuck due to this error.Is there any workaround available?

    Hi I was not able to verify your issue.Please give a look at the following screencast I've registered: http://www.screencast.com/t/i2BstZGO2nStated that Michael is upgrading from an existing 5.6.1, jomeyer which version were you using before?Can you guys please register a screencast with all the steps you perform in order to obtain the error?The exception you copy-pasted seems to be similar to what experienced in this issue: http://community.jaspersoft.com/jaspersoft-studio/issues/3977Did you used an already existing data adapter? Did you try to create a new one from scratch?Regards,Massimo.

    Hi Massimo,

    I like to take a look at your screencast - but is the URL that you provided correct?

    I can reproduce the issue quite easily on my WinXP VM.

    At the start i rename my existing Workspace directory (to "JasperWorkspace_Bak").

    Then i install JSS 6.0.0. Installation works without any problems.

    Now, when i start JSS 6.0.0 it asks me for my Workspace directory - i define a new, non-existing directory. JSS creates the directory. Fine so far.

    Now when i close the Welcome screen i have two data adapters (One Empty Record and Sample DB) in the Repository and three libs in the Project Explorer - an empty new world.

    Now i quit JSS and restart it again - just to test if the two data adapters are still there - they are, OK.

    I create a new XML file data adapter and save it, restart, it's still there, OK.

    But when i now open my XML data adapter and click on Test i'll get:

    java.lang.NullPointerException

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.loadDataDocument(XmlDataAdapterService.java:169)

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.contributeParameters(XmlDataAdapterService.java:90)

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.AbstractDataAdapterService.test(AbstractDataAdapterService.java:129)

    at com.jaspersoft.studio.data.wizard.AbstractDataAdapterWizard$3.run(AbstractDataAdapterWizard.java:165)

    at org.eclipse.jface.operation.ModalContext$ModalContextThread.run(ModalContext.java:121)

    Interestingly, during this test i did NOT get any "javax.xml.transform.TransformerException: java.io.FileNotFoundException" exceptions in the .log file...

    Regards,

    Michael

    Hi Massimo,

    I am upgrading from 5.6.1.

    At the first try I just opened the workspace used with 5.6.1 (assuming this would not be a problem). As soon as 6.0.0 was started, every data adapter except the 2 standard ones (empty, sampleDB) was gone. I did not consider that as an issue and created a new XML data adapter, but using it gave the error above.

    For the screencast, I think there is an issue with the link (as already reported by Michael Schmid).

    I now tried it with a completely new workspace: I created a new folder and switched to it in JSS 6.0.0 (using "switch workspace" command). Then I did the following:

    Create Data Adapter (in Repositories view) >> XML document >> choose a valid XML file >> push "Test" --> error:

    java.lang.NullPointerException

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.loadDataDocument(XmlDataAdapterService.java:169)

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.contributeParameters(XmlDataAdapterService.java:90)

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.AbstractDataAdapterService.test(AbstractDataAdapterService.java:129)

    at com.jaspersoft.studio.data.wizard.AbstractDataAdapterWizard$3.run(AbstractDataAdapterWizard.java:165)

    at org.eclipse.jface.operation.ModalContext$ModalContextThread.run(ModalContext.java:121)

    So I cannot even create a new XML data adapter in JSS 6.0.0.

    The folder ...workspace_jaspersoft_jss6\.metadata\.plugins\com.jaspersoft.studio contains to sub-folders:

    1) "serverprofiles" is empty

    2) "dataAdapters" contains 2 files reflecting the above mentioned standard data adapters

    This seems perfect for me because I did not save the new data adapter after the failed test.

    The file "...workspace_jaspersoft_jss6\.metadata\.log" contains this:

    Hi,

    here are the contents of my JaspersoftWorkspace directories - it's the complete workspace directory.

    The one is the newly created one by JSS 6.0.0, immediately after installation on first start. (JaspersoftWorkspaceAfterInstallation.zip)

    The second one is after i created a XML data adapter in the Repository - after a restart of JSS this data adapter is still there, OK. (JaspersoftWorkspaceWithXMLDataAdapter.zip)

    But when i try to click on the Test button, i get:

    java.lang.NullPointerException

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.loadDataDocument(XmlDataAdapterService.java:169)

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.contributeParameters(XmlDataAdapterService.java:90)

    Hi guys,

    I've fixed my screencast URL in the previous comment. It is:

    We will look into the attached workspaces to see if there is something strange. Indeed problems with data adapters disappearing are related to the issue mentioned above (#3977). There was a refactor in the way data adapters (and server profiles) were stored and handled.

    What I'm trying to figure out here is why there is this NullPointerException in the JR code. I will try to involve also the JR team in order to understand which can be the possible cause of this behavior.

    After looking at my screenshot can you guys please try to reproduce the same steps and verify if you have the error?

    Plus just in case attach the XML file you are using. Is it a valid one?

    Thanks,

    Massimo.

    P.S: for my example screencast I used the Northwind.xml data file take directly from the JasperReports samples. For the sake of simplicity I've attached it here.

    Hi Massimo,

    thanks for the corrected screencast link.

    After checking it I tried again with the provided Northwind link. I did the data adpater creation exactly as shown in the link but I still get the NullPointerException when I test it.

    I am sure that the error is not to a malformed XML file (I also checked my example).

    By the way:

    I think it's a pity that the standard workspace is saved only once. IMHO it would be better to save the standard workspace per JSS version. But that's off topic.

    Hi there,

    I did a little Research and created a little test case in a simple Java class. Here is it:

    package test;

    import net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapter;

    import net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterImpl;

    import net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService;

    import net.sf.jasperreports.engine.DefaultJasperReportsContext;

    import net.sf.jasperreports.engine.JasperReportsContext;

    import net.sf.jasperreports.engine.util.LocalJasperReportsContext;

    public class XmlDataAdapterTest {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

    System.out.println("Starting...");

    XmlDataAdapter da = new XmlDataAdapterImpl();

    da.setFileName("C:\\Dokumente und Einstellungen\\Administrator\\Eigene Dateien\\Reports\\department_overview.xml");

    System.out.println("Creating Context...");

    JasperReportsContext djrc = DefaultJasperReportsContext.getInstance();

    LocalJasperReportsContext ljrc = new LocalJasperReportsContext(djrc);

    XmlDataAdapterService das = new XmlDataAdapterService(ljrc, da);

    try {

    System.out.println("Testing...");

    das.test();

    }

    catch(Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(System.out); }

    }

    }

    This produces in the normal console (System.out) - beside a lot of info message in System.err:

    Starting...

    Creating Context...

    Testing...

    java.lang.NullPointerException

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.loadDataDocument(XmlDataAdapterService.java:169)

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.xml.XmlDataAdapterService.contributeParameters(XmlDataAdapterService.java:90)

    at net.sf.jasperreports.data.AbstractDataAdapterService.test(AbstractDataAdapterService.java:129)

    at test.XmlDataAdapterTest.main(XmlDataAdapterTest.java:22)

    A debug trace into the code show that the NPE comes because no factories can be found:

    Inside the net.sf.jasperreports.data.DataFileResolver.getService method:

    List factories = context.getExtensions(DataFileServiceFactory.class);

    No factories seem to be found... That leads then further to the NPE...

    So - according to this test case - the problem has nothing to do with the xml data file as such - i'll get exactly the error for exactly the same reason (no factories) when i specify a file that doesn't even exist.

    Regards,

    Michael

    It appears that the problem is present in the Community Edition but not in the Professional one. In fact I used that for my initial tests (i.e. registered screencast).Anyhow we have spot the problem causing it. We will fix for the next upcoming release. In the meanwhile you will be able to grab an integration build in the next few days.Keep a look on the bug in order to see when it will be closed.Regards,Massimo.

    Hi Massimo and Marco,

    Thanks for the good news!

    I'll observe this bug and will try the new build as soon as it is available.

    You'll publish the URL here, or somewhere else?

    Hello,

    good news for the loss of data sources. I would also be interested in the bug link.

    Anyway, the NullPointerException is the bigger issue for me (as said: we only have XML file data sources in the current project). How is this issue trated? Is there also a ticket handling the workaorund Marco describes?

    The FileNotFountException as said was generated from the class StreamResult, they already have a bug opened for this https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/XALANJ-2386

    We can avoid this bug changing the constructor used to build this class, and in the next version this fix will be included. We also had already a ticket opened for this bug that i closed yesterday due my fix. However the link is: http://community.jaspersoft.com/jaspersoft-studio/issues/3977#comment-809561

    I've fixed the bug regarding this exception

    unfortunately it's not related to the NullPointerException. However this was a bug of javax.xml.transform.stream.StreamResult, so not directly related to JSS, but i've found a workaround to it.

    I guess you mean the NullPointerException, not the FileNotFoundException? If not, what about the NullPointerException fix?

    Sorry if I confuse things, but currently, I am confused for myself.

    I was talking about the FileNotFountException that was raised in the second half of post #12. For the null pointer exception on the Test we still working on it and when there will be news we will post them here.

    Hi all, I've committed the fix for the bug. You guys will be able to grab a new integration build directly from here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/jasperstudio/files/beta-release/It should be published by the end of the day, keep an eye on the above link.Regards,Massimo.P.S: let us know if the problem is not solved, and just in case re-open the bug.

    @morlandin: OK; thanks for clarifying. Sorry, I was mixing up things.

    But: is it OK to mark this thread as resolved even if the NullPointerException (from the thread description) is not fixed? Will you anyway work on a resolved issue?

    Hi Massimo,

    I just tested the 6.0.1 version - good news: the NPE is gone and i can use the XML data adapters.

    Bad news: i'm using user function and i seem to be affected by issue 3972.

    I get strange ClassNotFoundException. It says that it can't find net.sf.jasperreports.functions.AbstractFunctionSupport.

    Regards, Michael
