Jasperreports does not support the autoSizeColumn method in the HSSFSheet of org.apache.poi (3.1.0). Hence it is not possible to genereate xml files where the column with adapts to the content in column.
It would be a quite small change in the net.sf.jasperreports.engine.export.JRXlsExporter to enable column autosize.

As this issue is more a feature than a bug I reported
