creating table using Excel sheet as source data

Hi all,

    I am still learning to use Jaspersoft Studio, and I am having bit of trouble creating table using Excel spreadsheet as data.  At this point, I would like to know how to diagnose the issue.

    So, going onto specific...I installed the software on Linux, have pretty much followed through the guideline for creating table, using the excel spreadsheet as source data.  When I preview the report, I see no table at all.  Hence, not really sure what I am doing wrong.  If anyone could provide me with some hints on how to deal with this issue, that would be much appreciated.  Thank you.
