Parameter values are null before query execution

I m passing Parameters from first report to the second report  Eg: param1 ,param2. In the second report , some calculations and processes are to be done with the passed parameters param1 ,param2 . These calcuations are to be done before query execution. So in the query , I m using a new parameter $P!{calculate}.  The parameter 'cacluate' calls a java method and takes input as param1 ,param2.But the values of the param1 and param2 are printed as 'null' before query execution . The original value is printed in the fill portion of the report after query execution.

How to get the value of the parameter before query execution?
