Get data out of sub-dataset / table

Hello,

I have a number of sub-data sets in use in my report, used in either charts or tables. I need to know how to get that data back into the main report as well. For example, taking the final sum of a data set, and using it as a parameter into another data set (say for running totals across tables).

I need to avoid using subreports, as we're using Jaspersoft Server, and the way it handles sub-reports is truly horrendous. Additionally, it doesn't really solve the problem as we need to use charts/tables in any case...

I'm sure this is just a simple thing I've not found yet, can somoene point me to where I can access this?
