passing variable from subreport to parent report

Can you pass a variable that is local to subreport back to the parent report? I can do it with the embedded variables (REPORT_COUNT) but I can't do it with user-defined variables. What am I missing?

Never mind. I closed iReports and opened it back up and I stopped getting the error.
