if you do use Oracle ask for the ROWNUM in your query, this variable will give to you the row number (in the result table) of each row. If you're using whatever else database, just have a look to this database documentation, the row number might be provided by the base as far as I understood how the whole thing works.

I guess the builtin variable "REPORT_COUNT" contains always the current number of record. Try to put that builtin-variable int your detailband, and you will get the numbers. :-)
