Problems with extra white space

I have an iReports report design (version 0.2.3.1) with several vertically positioned fields (all in the detail band) looking like this:

 

----------some header text----------

Title:

A title string

 

Authors:

Author string

 

Date: date string

 

Number: book number string

 

Quantity: a number

...

 

All of the static text labels and data fields have the "float" attribute and the "remove line when blank" attribute enabled. The Title, Author, Date and Number static text labels and fields have the same "Print when expression" condition. The Quantity field always prints.

 

When the "print when expression" condition is true everything looks fine. However, when the "print when expression" condition is false, causing the Title, Author, Date and Number fields not to print, there is an excessive amount of white space (blank lines) between the header text and the Quantity field.

 

Is there anything else I should be doing to get the extraneous blank lines to go away?
