Automatic label generation...

2004-06-29 01:11

Not sure if this is the best place to put it, but here goes...

How about a couple of fields on the Field View dialog box, one checkbox called automatic field generation, and another combo box with Left, Right, Top, Bottom.

This way, when you drag a field to the report, iReports will automatically generate a label for the field that is being dropped.

This will make report generation much faster than it currently is, especially if their are a lot of fields to drop as in my case.

Also, it could possess some smarts, ie, if a field was in title case, as in SpaceThisFieldOut, then it would generate a label like "Space This Field Out" except without the quotes. The same could be said with fields with _ as the seperator.

Thoughts??

Add a label when drop in the report sound good.

Smarts about label values are interesting too.

The info about if and how create a label on the fly dropping a field should reside in the options window.

What do you think?

P.S. This is the right place where post this messages

Options would be normal place for it to go. Maybe for a default preference. Idea of having in field view so that it was easy to change on the fly. IE, you want some orientated one way (ie Left), and some another (ie Above).

It doesn't worry where the option is really, just that it can do it. Also, along with this would be auto-resizing of the label when it was dropped onto the layout such that unless changed, you wouldn't have to to touch the label size, only perhaps position.
