Data base exception and user friendly error messages

HI,

In my report when i select the date range for more than 3 months DB throws exception with the message date range can not excede more than 3 months. Can some one help how will I read this and print user friendly error message? currently it is showing generin error message for contacting system admin which does not give any clue about the error. For some reasons we are not supposed to handle this from front end to restrict the range.
