iReport 3.0.1 column overflow

Hi,

I'm using iReport 3.0.1 to generate a 2-column report.  The detail band is surrounded by a few other bands for the purpose of determining when to start a new column or page.  The issue I'm having is that once in a while, a 'paragraph' overflows from column 1 into column 2, and instead of the next 'paragraph' printing immediately below still in column 2, a new page is started.  Is there a property I can set to have this function as I described?  I've seen a few posts about the Split Type property, but I don't think this was available in iReport 3.0.1.
