Hello,
You'll need to use the Jasper element called "Crosstab".
After you drag a Crosstab element onto your report design, you'll be prompted to select a data source and to indicate which data points are for the columnar groups and row groups. (This will take a bit of experimenting depending on your data set.)
Be sure to give enough horizontal space to the Crosstab. By default, the Crosstab only displays a small width, which means horizontal columns get bumped down the page rather than repeated horizontally as expected.
I hope that helps.

I'm using Jaspersoft Studio CE 5.6.0 and was seeing the same odd sort of behavior where the return values from a subreport were not showing up--even though the variable mappings in the main report were correctly pointing to the source variables in the subreport. I switched the "Evaluation Time" from "Now" to "Auto" as you described, and it fixed the issue. Thank you!!
How to increase jvm heap space on studio 6?

I'm using Studio 5 (not 6) on OS X. The file is located in the following path:
/Applications/Jaspersoft Studio 5.6.0.final/Jaspersoft Studio.app/Contents/MacOS/Jaspersoft Studio.ini
Be sure to make a backup copy of the file, then change -Xms and -Xmx lines to the following (assuming you have enough RAM on-board):
-Xms1024m
-Xmx40964m
Restart Studio and you should hopefully have enough resources allocated to the JVM.
