We were able to resolve this issue by upgrading JasperReport Library to 4.6.3. Once we installed the library, the problem went away.

I did get a work-around to work, although the question still remains.
Here is my work-around. I use the .tostring method in the Bucket Expression of the Row Group. This converts the Long to a string, preventing the error. Why it has to be a string is still beyond me and could be an issue in other circumstances.
