[JRFontNotFoundException and Standard Type 1 Fonts]

Why do I get

 Font 'Courier' is not available to the JVM. For more details, see http://jasperreports.sourceforge.net/api/net/sf/jasperreports/engine/util/JRFontNotFoundException.html

When I run a report to PDF? This is running on a headless machine so it doesn't have fonts installed, but do I actually need TTFs for standard type 1 PDF fonts? I would've thought that everything related to these fonts would be standardized, including metrics.

 

I'm on version 3.7.2.
