I can get autodetect to work in the xls output by using the code in the xml file using iReport 3.7.1.
<property name="net.sf.jasperreports.export.xls.detect.cell.type" value="true"/>
But I have not been able to get the autodetect to work with the xlsx output. What is the code or what is the procedure to get autodetect to work in the xlsx output? Does autodetect work in xlsx? Please enlighten me.
IMHO I would recommend "detect cell type" default to true for xls and xlsx.
Thanks,

Reverting back to iReport 3.7.1 fixed this error. This may be simpler for you that upgrading to jasper reports 3.7.2. There must be an incompatibility between iReport 3.7.2 and Jasper Report 3.7.1 and
I didn't know you had to upgrade iReports and Jasper Reports in lockstep.

This exception was thrown when a cell in the data had a tab(0x09) character. My solution replace all tab characters using the sql statement. Not a great long term solution.
Has anyone submitted this as a bug? Is this fixed in the current version?
Thanks,
Fish
