I believe there is scope for extending Jasper Server to make it into a DMS (Document Management System). The best way to do this IMHO is to make the backend store JSR-170, or JSR-283 compliant.
Instead of reinventing the wheel, it would perhaps be wise to somehow integrate Apache Jackrabbit (http://jackrabbit.apache.org/). This would give us version control, and more compatibility with other systems. It would also save on development effort in the longterm.
