The Javascript implementation does not appear to offer any ability debug scripts. I tried:

alert() <- undefined
print() <- undefined
java.lang.System.out.println() <- no idea where output is sent

Have I missed something? If not, then at a minimum, some kind of debug-via print capability should be provided.

java.lang.System.out.println should work. The output will of course go to the standard output stream of the Java process. Where that ends up depends on your Java application.

Can you provide any particular example code?

JasperReports uses JavaScript compiler to convert JavaScript to Java so it should be the same as when using Java.
That is, java.lang.System.out.println() and java.lang.System.err.println() should output to standard output and to error output.
