Group on Fields from a connection
You should be able to specify that iReport group by a particular field (from a data source) and have the program generate the group expression. This would be much more intuitive than having the user enter the group expression (they should still be able to enter it manually as well).
Many writers of reports could be non technical and or not remember the syntax for the group expressions in jasper reports.

I realized that you can group on fields from a data source through the report wizard. There sould be something like that in the groups dialog that you get when you click on the icon in the toolbar.
