Using Jasper report to serve JSON with pagination

I'll start this with a disclaimer that what we're trying to do might be a bad idea, or there might be a much better way to do it...

We're currently investigating how to use a jasper report to return JSON with support for pagination.  We've been able to create a report that returns JSON, and lets us pick which page, but is always a page size of 1 and doesn't allow us to change it by input/query parameter.

I've found documenation about resources, but that doesn't seem to apply to this use case at all.

Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated!
