Can a report trigger Java code to run?

I am trying to create a report that retrieves data from an API, and this requires java code to run during the runtime execution of the report. I am lost as to how to get java code to run when the user runs the report, and I can't find much in the documentation. Any help you can offer is appreciated.

You can use Scriptlet to run your code from JasperReports engine.
