How to handle special characters in jasper 5.0.1 ?

I am fetching the data from database and passing it to jasper. These data may contain html tags and codes for other special character like delta, pi, φ, Σ, Ω, ∩ as ∆ etc. When jasper report is generated all the html tags are handled properly because I have made 'markup' as 'html' but these special characters are getting ommitted. I dont know why jasper is ignoring only these html codes. Can anyone please help me to resolve this.

Regards

Sup

Thank you so much for responding. As you have mentioned I tried with unicode but its still not working. When I browsed for unicode of delta character it was listing out various types of delta symbols. In our database we can not make out that it can vary. Can you please suggest something ?
