Startup question for Jaspersoft 6.1.1 from Windows 7

1. I downloaded zip file, unzipped and started to run "JasperSOft Studio" application. Not sure if I missed a step of actual installation. If yes, then which file should I use to install?

2. I declared a simple XLS file as source and started to design my first report. Dragged 3 fields into detail area. Ask for preview, it comes with 'document empty'.

After I saved jrxml and reopened, then try to run (preview) then it does not give me 'document empty' message, it

shows me report with header, column headers but "null" in place of data.

Seems to me there is an issue with connecting to data source.

In the Dataset and Query dialog, check if the xls data is being read correctly. Scroll down and there should be tabs where you can preview data.

That is great clue. Data preview does not show any data. It only shows the fields (column headers).

When I created Data Adapter, this is where I linked to excel file (xlsx).

I shall try again with a different excel file.

I went ahead and did similar steps with CSV file and things work well.

I could do "data preview" and also "report preview".

Now I shall try to work with the XLSX source file to troubleshoot further.
