I have being asked to create a report/chart from the following type of data.

Portfolio 1 - Investment 1 - end date 3/15/2016

Portfolio	Project	End Date
1	1	3/15/2016
1	2	5/20/2016
1	3	8/8/2017
2	4	4/15/2016
2	5	6/31/2016
2	6	9/20/2017
3	7	12/20/2016
3	8	12/1/2017
3	9	1/1/2018

The output is some like this:

you can use crosstab and achieve that.

You can create this report and chart easily by using adhoc-designer on jasper report server. Add the fields at rows and columns, select crosstab, right click date field and select quarter under the group by section. But If you have to use studio, you can do this with crosstab component
