Counting Records when expression changes....

Hi,

This is probably very simple, but......newbie. Sorry!

I bought the manuals, looked everywhere and am still wracking my brains.

I have a MySQL SQL that fetches my data ok, I display it in iReport OK.

I now want to count the number of records when a particular field changes (string).

For example the number of records for "ping up" and "ping down" and "LAN Dead" etc. From a list of 5000 which are all time and date stamped.

I have set up a variable called count but I cannot figure out how to set it so that when "Ping up" changes to "Ping down" it resets and starts counting again. I also just want to display my result when the description changes with the possibilty of making a simple pie chart.

I have ordered my SQL by that field and my report is beautiful.

If I am an idiot please point an old programmer in the right direction of an example.

Thanks in advance.

Chris
