Print calculated Average in Group header

I'm sure this has been asked before but I haven't been able to find a clue in either the forum or iReport-Ultimate-Guide-3 I've purchased.

I have a simple Sales report where I have products grouped into different categories.  Here is a fictitional, simplified version.

    Cookies     --- average sale= $x.xx
        Oreo                                   $30.00
        Mrs. Fields                         $250.00
        Kroger                                $125.00

    Crackers     --- average sale= $x.xx
        Saltine                                $35.00
        Wheat Thins                       $155.00
        Nip Chee                            $110.00

The problem is calculating the "average sale" for each category AND printing it in the category group header.  If I do the calculation in the footer I get the correct answer but printing it won't work because there is no way to print relative to the header group (so if the # items varies there goes alignment to the header).

Any help appreciated.

Good catch.  There were a number of problems including the eval time.  I was certain it was me and not JasperReports.
